The year that begins sees us always present to honor and remember, in our incurable desire to make the choices of the future dictated by conscience and knowledge of the past.
Too many times we have heard him say "a nation that forgets its past does not have a future", true words, but that if they do not remain in the soul of those who pronounce them will never enter the soul of those who listen and remain words.
This blog was born to be different from the usual "bla bla bla" of circumstance.
We are different? perhaps.
We are few? perhaps.
But today, January 1, 2019, in greeting us on the phone, with Paolo F. we talked about the next 75th anniversary of the landing of Anzio that we will honor together with the association of the Third Infantry Division and Paolo wanted to share, on the phone, the memory of young RSI soldiers who in Canale Mussolini massacred themselves for an ideal that they thought was right and it was not, but always having in their hearts the homeland.
Yesterday on the phone there was talk of the 75th anniversary of the landing of Anzio with Giuseppe M. between greetings and the other, and it was all so stupendously normal for us and so, so, "strange" for those who were waiting for lunch.
And even today, while first seconds and desserts fill the tables, I'm here to write to you ...
We represent those who fought against Fascism and Nazism, but we remember, on a feast day, also young people pervaded by an ideal that we deny, but with a courage that must be admired without barriers or fences, young people left to rot on the shores of that channel and then thrown into a common ossuary, as unknown.
We are so different that we decide to go to honor all the fallen in the Anzio shrines at the end of January while the tombola is organized in the next room.
We are so different that we wish good luck thinking about a Medal Of Honor; we toast to the new year and dream of finding the point where Armstrong of the 15th Regiment of the Third Division, completed his heroic action in Montelungo and had his Silver Star, so that day remains fixed in time.
It is precisely for this reason that we are different than our time, this time that we spend with our loved ones, we share it at the same time with the past time, which for us is always present and makes us appreciate the time we live.
Yesterday evening, from the tarnished glass of a window in the hall, while fireworks went, I thought back to how many eyes the sky had seen on the nights of December 31st 1939, 1940, 1941, 42, 1943 and of '44.
How many memories of the year just ended passed in their minds and the hope that the new year could bring with it the peace and the chance to live it as I was living it.
Wife, relatives, friends, a fireplace of food and lots of sweets.
We are so different, that returning home last night we were once again aware of the gift of freedom and those who had fought and sacrificed their lives to give it to us.
And it will be so again throughout 2019.
Best wishes to all of us.
